Ahmadi Golf Course

The early years of the oil industry in Kuwait saw the Kuwait Oil Company Headquarters and the housing facilities located at Magwa. The very first golf course in Kuwait was located there and comprised of nine holes. In the late 1940’s, it was decided to relocate the Company town 12kms. South to an elevated area now known as Ahmadi.

In 1949, Colt, Alison and Morison – a company of golf course architects from the United Kingdom – was engaged to design a golf course at Ahmadi. Mr. Morison traveled to Kuwait and designed an 18 hole course of which only 9 holes were built at that time. Those original holes are now holes Nos. 1,2,3,7,8,9,10,17 & 18, whilst the shed adjacent to the 4th brown was the clubhouse.

It was another 10 years before Ahmadi Golf Course had an 18 hole course. However, the original plan for the remaining holes was not utilized. The course was opened in 1960. It is only supposition that Mr. Henry Longhurst opened the course, but it is true that he played the course.

During the 60’s, many small changes took place. In the mid 70’s the course was altered to equalize the par for the course with the S.S.S. At that time the par and the S.S.S. was 69.

Over the years, the course has been played by many fine golfers and the old course record stands permanently at 67. The joint record holders, who incidentally were all from the Ahmadi area, were A. Redshaw, P.M.W. Goodwin and S. D. Smith.

Further changes to the course were completed during 1981 and 1982 of which the most important were the lengthening of the course and the introduction of many new bunkers. These bunkers were located in the driving areas so that more thought and accuracy off the tee would be required. The par and S.S.S. were increased to 70 whilst the stroke index of the holes from the Lady’s and Gentlemen’s were equalized.

The new course record of 67 was established by Brian Griffin in 1993 during the November Medal Competition.

The present membership respects the efforts of all those persons who have contributed to the success of the Ahmadi Golf Course and the considerable effort expended in rehabilitating the club after the Gulf War. This year’s upgrades include the introduction of water hazards in front of the 9th brown and to the right of the 18th brown, the removal of the blind 4th hole and the reshaping of the surrounding terrain including new bunkers, repairs to the fairways of holes 13, 14, 16 & 18 and new practice putting and chipping area near the clubhouse.
